Is it common for the Edison Blue Amberol Cylinders to be missing the lid? Becuse almost all of my Blue Amberols are missing their lids.

Paul,
As you may know, there were several types of boxes for the BA and if you check Shane's recent post you will find the different types pictured. The last box had a pressed cover that only fit about 7/8ths or so onto the box and these seem to be the most frequently lost as they lose their shape and don't grip the box well. The first style that had the fitted lid seems to be the more hardy of the bunch and when that lid was later coupled with the next style box it seems that many only have the blue ring left as people pushed the lid on too hard and popped the cover off leaving the ring. It's not uncommon for owners back then to even sew the center of the lid back on to the rest of the cover! I have several examples of this type of repair from different purchases over the years so it makes one wonder if this was something that was in a phonograph publication at one time or just an example of necessity being the mother of invention!

Some of the lids were a fairly tight fit also, and as you push the lid down, the air inside the box has nowhere to escape, and this will sometimes blow the top of the lid off. When I get a box with original lid thats a tight fit, I now put a pin hole in the base of the box to allow the air to escape & prevent damage to the lid. Funny Bill should mention the lids being repaired with a needle & thread. I was just thinking about those the other day, as I've also found a couple out here in the wild too.

Shane, Interesting that you poke a vent hole in the bottom of your boxes. It rang a bell so I went and checked a few of my early boxes with the fitted lid and they all had holes poked in the bottom. These are all stamped " Seeley Tube & Box Co., Newark, N.J. I always thought this hole was for centering the punch but perhaps this was actually for relieving the air pressure caused by replacing the lid!

Mine say the same thing, but even some of those are missing the tops of the lids.
