I know next to nothing about cylinders and players. I have to deal with my brothers's estate which includes about 50 cylinders and a player which does not have needles but seems to work. I plan to use eBay. First I need a little education. Can someone suggest resources on the net or in books that will give me some idea how to evaluate what I have?

Hello, members of The Online Edison Phonograph Discussion Board. I am not sure that this thread, 'Welcome', was intended for new member introductions, but i am going to venture on out here anyway. I have found that it is usually appreciated by the established membership of any BBS discussion group to have those new to the group provide a basis for participation.
I am not going to try and disguise the reasons for my sudden interest in old phonographs; I was recently gifted a large cabinet style phonograph player and have been researching to learn more about it. I may or may not decide to try and sell it, depending on what i learn. It is in the interest of furthering that purpose that i have joined your discussion group and i hope i will be forgiven if my questions have been misdirected. Perhaps you might be willing to send me along in a direction more suited to my quest, a polite redirect would be appreciated.
I am a 34 year old stay at home mom to 3 brilliant girls, living in the Pacific Northwestern United States. My husband has recently returned home from an eighteen month long deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are, of course, delighted and relieved to have had him return home safely.
I am going to spend a bit of time in deciding where it may be most appropriate to present my questions. I thank you for your polite attention despite your busy schedules.

ANY and ALL questions regerading your phonograph are most welcome here - no such thing as a dumb question! I can remember when I purchased my first machine, and knew NOTHING about phonographs - at that time there was no online discussion board to turn to - so..... ask away! Hopefully we can help.

Wow! This is cool that there is a Discussion board for fans of Edison Phonographs. I myself, just started getting into Edison Phonographs, and memorabilia. Years ago, my father gave me an old Edison Diamond Disc Record as a gift. At the time, I did not know Edison had made disc records, just the cylinder ones. Last month while perusing one of the local antique shops where I live, I found an old phonograph, which I though was a Victrola, but turned out to be an Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph. At a very reasonable price, $295.00. It also came with one disc. It is a floor standing model, # S-19, which looked like it was either restored, or just well taken care of. I was happy that it worked. BTW: Yes I do own in, just in case, anyone has not figured that out. The dealer also, had some other disc, that I purchase as well. Plus but more off of ebay. Then found 13 more at another antique mall, for a total of 28. Most of which are in good shape. Except for two that are damaged, and they sit in a display case in my living room. Along with two other disc's in original sleeves. I started doing some more research on the disc's, and found a gentleman, who told me how to care for the disc's, plus how much, I should pay for them. He also recommended that I have, the reproducer serviced, and told me about a guy, in Michigan who repairs antique phonographs. I'm so glad this board has started. I love my few victor and brunswicks I have but I have alot more cylinders and over Christmas I put on an Old time Phonograph Hour at the retirement home in my town and they just loved it. All Christmas songs from a yodelling santa to Hardy Williamson's version of The Star of Bethlehem ba23145 my favorite so far. This cylinder has a black core (why?)and my have been recorded in England? The sound is breath taking.If any of you Edison guru's have some info on Hardy or this cylinder I would love to hear it.
