Years ago I bought a new pathe sapphire stylus, then a couple years back, found another in a tin I bought amoungst the needles. I pulled them out the other day after I got a bunch of pathes, and noticed they were different. The new one has a ball shaped stylus- obviously for pathes, but the other one has a cone shaped stylus, and a flat surface on the needle bar which you insert into the soundbox. Is the cone shaped one possibly for playing DDs on say-a brunswick? I didnt want to test it incase I damaged the needle &/or record.

Shane,
Cheney made ball and point stylus for playing Pathe and Edison and had both lateral and vertical heads. I have about two of the point ones, they are held in by shellac. When I examined mine under a loupe both points were bad. I think other companies did the same. I do not like playing DD's on players where the groove has to pull the reproducer along.

Steve is right. I have a Brunswick Mod. 117 that has the 3 way Ultona head, and when I first obtained it, The Edison side would gouge up the dead wax area before I adjusted it. It now plays DDs fine, but I'm not crazy about relying on the groove to pull the reproducer thru the record. I'm sure Edison probably realized this and that is why he didn't recommend playing DDs on other machines, and of course he would lose sales too!
