I have an update somewhat to my original issues of reproducer slowing down and mandrel not spinning unless I give it a tug... though the thread is titled Standard A, this is regarding a Standard D machine that has been converted to 4min...
As mentioned before, I cleaned and oiled the top and bottom motor works..I did not grease the spring..
On a full crank, i can turn the machine on and it will spin and play 1 four minute record in its entirety.
After the record finishes, I turn the machine off, and start it again, it will spin just fine. When I attempt to play the record for the 2nd time, it will play for about 30sec, then it will slow down to a halt. When I lift the reproducer, it will spin normal speed...
Now at this point, everytime I start the machine, I will have to give the mandrel a slight tug for it to start spinning, and then it spins freely (for several more minutes). But I can not get another record to play other than the First full play when it was initially cranked..
This is not normal correct? I should be able to get a few plays from a full crank? One successful 4min play, then cant get another play but motor spins at what seems to be normal speed... Any thoughts on what can be happening here

The Standard D is a single-mainspring machine. If that mainspring is struggling against old, gummy grease in the barrel, or is weak from having been left wound up for many years, it can behave exactly as you describe. Your solutions are:
1) Shoot a little WD-40 into the spring barrel through a port in the side of the barrel. Try this with the spring wound and also unwound. Don't overdo - a 1 second shot will be enough to dissolve/soften the old grease without having it drip out. Fully wind and allow to run until it stops on its own 3-4 times to work the WD-40 through the spring barrel.
2) If #1 is unsuccessful, remove the spring/barrel assembly, clamp it into a vise with wooden blocks, carefully remove the mainspring, clean it and the barrel, regrease using any good synthetic grease commonly available at auto parts stores or Walmart, and reassemble. (Take care that you reassemble the mainspring into the barrel in the same configuration as originally found (e.g.: counter-clockwise or clockwise).
3) If #3 is unsuccessful, obtain a new mainspring, grease and assemble in your barrel. You can also send your barrel/mainspring assembly to a repairman and he will return it to you all ready to install. Ron Sitko charges $15 for this service, and in my opinion it's well worth it.
Good luck.

Great thank you George! I know I have seen his contact on one of these threads, but can you please provide it to me so I can look at that option of sending it off.

George, Just wanted to add another note here.. I took out the mainsprings in a couple of machines to have them sent off to be cleaned and/or replaced. You mentioned this could be a reason that my D machine would only play one cylinder all the way through and then slow to a halt at the start of the second play. I notice that after this happens, If i take the belt off the pulley, the governor will spin pretty fast and strong for several more minutes. Just checking to see if you still feel it may be a spring issue that I am having? Again, the top and bottom works have been cleaned and lubed, and I do get 1 very good play of the cylinder. Thnx

No, if removing the belt allows the motor to run for "several more minutes," there's clearly a problem with the upper works. With the belt disconnected and carriage raised, you should be able to spin the mandrel with your fingers and have it continue spinning on its own for 2 - 3 seconds. If it doesn't do this, it needs adjustment.
