Hello, I recently inherited, well found in the garage my grandfather's Edison phonograph. It is in a very poor state but the mechanism still operates internally as I can hear it although there is no drive belt. The part that I guess would have the stylus and help amplify the sound is also missing. I live in Scotland, and my question is can anyone recommend a place to have the phonograph restored? I don't want to try myself for fear of damaging it further. There was also a box of cylinders so would love to hear it play again.

Hi: I would recommend the Talking Machine Forum as a good site to join: its membership is much more active and helpful, and they have sections for UK and European resources. You might also include some photos of the phonograph, to aid in finding the correct reproducer etc.
If you are at all handy with tools, or simply want to learn more about machines and restoration, there is also Eric L. Reiss's book, "The Compleat Talking Machine": it is an invaluable asset for any. collector. I hope these suggestions will be of some help.
