Thanks Paul! I think it is interesting that there was a gradual psychological shift in both the public and the industry's perception of the phonograph. It seems that once certain technological plateaus were reached, the marketing attention turned distinctly to the outward appearance. Eldridge Johnson's insistence that the Victrola was a musical instrument unto itself gave way to hiding the phonograph in the room with period cabinetry. I think the progression, i.e., from fancy carved cases like the Victor Monarch Deluxe to wooden horns to the VTLA to art cases in trying to get record players into the best homes -- and eventually succeeding -- is fascinating. I realize you showed an Edison ad and I'm talking Victor, but it is a parallel track and I think Victor's locomotive was considerably out front of Edison's in this department.
