How is everyone doing? It has been awhile since I’ve run into a problem. Since becoming an Edison Phonograph nut I’ve acquired several different models. My lasted endeavor is a Gem Model. I bought it very inexpensive with the motor, carriage & reproducer missing. Might have been a mistake. In my searching for these items I very seldom see any. Are they that difficult to find or am I missing something? The carriage & reproducer are the most difficult to locate. Is there a standard one or is there one that fits/matches different types? Any information or leads would be great. I have checked a couple on–line dealers/catalogs but they seem to be quite high priced. Thank you all again for any assistance. It has really been both challenging and fun working with these machines. Respectfully, Tim O’D

There are a few different carriages, including one with the reproducer built as part of the carriage. Do you know what model Gem you've got? There are a few different model A's- one with a wooden base & "Gem" decal on the front. and another that should have a small metal drip tray that sits under the machine & has the I.D tag attached to the front. If you're not sure about the model, you may have to post a photo.

Hello, I believe that my Gem is a Model "B". It has a wooden base that screws to the metal case. The wooded top slips over the player with a slot for the crank. It then attaches to the player by two metal screws. I think, but am not sure, that the Model "A" is wound by a key not a crank. The Gem decal is attached to the metal faceplate that sticks up and that the carriage/arm rests on. There is no metal drip pan, but then again it could be missing. If the serial number helps it is G138790. I am sorry that I don't have any additional information but I am still learning. I have only been involved with Edison Phonographs about 4 or 5 months. Thank you in advance for any help that you can give. I really appreciate everything. Thanks, Tim O'D

Hi Tim,
If your GEM still retains the end gate and has a crank in lieu of a key, it is more than likely a Mod. B. Your speed control knob should be on the right, in front of the crank. Only the early As had the drip pan and won't have the wood base. It will take the Mod. C Reproducer and those are plentiful. The GEMS are neat little machines, albeit a bit noisy when running.
