I picked up a repro witch's hat today. The player is skipping and repeating at points. I checked the feedscrew and it is free of any damage. I checked any glide points and they are clean. The guide rod for the carriage is lubricated, and I timed the unit and it plays fine. It is only skipping when the horn (and it's weight) is on the reproducer.
So...what can I do to stop the skipping?

Hmm. Off of the top of my head, I'd first check to see that the record isn't slipping off the mandrel as you're playing. I've got a few problem records that just don't want to "snug up" properly. I use a couple of pieces of tape at the right hand end of the record just to keep it in place. Be careful not to force a wax record on too much as they will crack easily. Skipping also happens when trying to play a 4 min. record on a 2 min. machine. (or vice-versa.)
Next, check to see if the reproducer isn't somehow being pulled-out slightly by the weight of the horn. The other likely area is the that the half nut is out of adjustment (or trashed). How's the stylus look on the reproducer? Witch's Hat horns put a fair amount of drag on the mechanism, so this is where you'll find any problems with adjustments. Be patient, stick with it and I have no doubt you'll get it. Do you have Eric Reiss' book "The Compleat Talking Machine"? It's a must-have for working on these things. Good luck! Martin

I have Reiss's book. It is helpful in some areas, and less so in others. The bulk of your comments are non-applicable to my situation, but the half-nut (it is the original and I have a spare repro in perfect shape I may install) and the reproducer lock down I will tinker with and get back with you

Update: Changed out the original halfnut with my nice new repro and the unit plays perfectly Woohoo! Now I just need a lid for my Standard B and it is 100% complete.

Great news! (So many little things will get you on cylinders.) Good luck on the lid search! Martin
