Here are some pictures of the case. I buffed down the the shellac with some steel wool and then put a little orange oil on it to try and balance out the bedframe with the case. Part of the case refused to take stain, and the bedframe just doesn't match. Furthermore, even though I used the original screw holes, the frame is not evenly lined up on top with the holes for the lid locks. Beats me. I'm giving this one to my older sister as a gift. She wanted the machine to show it's age, so all I did was polish what I could and just cleaned everything topside. The motor was disassembled and cleaned up (and runs great!).

I have yet to work on the top. I have all the paperwork to file for insurance, but I think I'm just going to try and put it back together myself and nuts to the insurance. I am in the process of moving to a new apartment. As of now I'm just trying to get this player literally up to speed.
The more I read and see other people's work, the more I feel incredibly bad at getting my stuff to look "authentic" in finish. Ah well, practice makes perfect as they say.

Looks great so far! Keep it up. The more I read and see other people's work, the more I feel incredibly bad at getting my stuff to look "authentic" in finish. Ah well, practice makes perfect as they say. I wouldn't beat yourself up. Having spent a few more years on this rock we call home I can assure you that nothing will ever be right! There will always be something that could have been better. But if you're having as much fun as I am messing around with these old beasts then that's all that matters. And you learn things along the way. And that my friend is all that matters; waking up tomorrow morning knowing just a bit more about something than yesterday.

Hi All, Next time mix some color from a company called Transart-it will mix with the shellac and you can tone the wood to match -they have anumber of colors that work well with oak. They can be gotten from woodcrafters or just put the name in on the web and that will come up and you can order direct. Abe

Over the years I have had a number of the frames where the wood expanded. Looks like that's what happenned to you. On the side where the gearing is on bed plate, is the bed plate sitting on top of the hole? If so, what you need to do is knock tha t side out, carefully adjust it with the lid on to make sure lid goes on properly, then, re-glue. You may have to do some very careful edge sanding to match it up properly. With age, wood sometimes expands, and, or, shrinks. I have one Edison B Home that did just that, and, I had to do some fancy work to get the lid to fit on. Bill Cahill
