My experience with Minwax tung oil was very disappointing over time. After a lot of coats of applications it looked pretty good on an upright piano I did years ago. But after a while it lost its sheen and became rather dull looking. I guess another coat may have fixed that, can't recall what I did, the piano eventually got sold.

Well after quite a few hours of work I'm getting close to the end. I have a few things to touch up but at least it's ready to put in the living room now. Thanks for the hints and help.

Well you have certainly gone to a lot of effort which has turned out quite good. Only thing I personally would do different is the turntable which originally was a olive green tone felt that brings out the mahogany nicely. When I redid my Chippendale I purchased a felt described as being for the edison, but it turned out to be way to "christmas" looking green to suit me and I hope to find a olive tone eventually to replace it. I know that those felt companies make about every possible tone of felt from when I worked and had to purchase it, but to get a small amount is a pain since no one locally seems to carry it.

It really is a great improvement. Hardly seems like the same machine. You've done a wonderful job & should be proud. I bet your father would be too. Have you ordered a new "Edison" decal for the back of the lid? Larry, this is a very late example of the C19, and should have the mustard felt like in the original pics. Being such a late example, I'd say the grille cloth would have been the same as on the L35 below. I normally try & replace the fabrics with something close to the original if possible, but I've done one occasionally just to match the decor of the room it will be in. Unlike the finish, the beauty of the fabrics is that you can change them as often as you like- unless it is the original felt or cloth ofcourse

Very sweet! The grain really pops out at you. What did you wind up using for a top coat sealer over the mahogany stain? I'm guessing you chose the red TT felt and bumpers as a personal choice.

Shane, your right, the machine had that latter tan sort of colored felt. My William and Mary console had that and I always liked it.
Its very difficult to find a material that suits the grill of most machines anymore that resembles the original. Its too bad some one isn't creating at least a few patterns of material suitable for the acoustic era.. Some sell lots of radio cloths, but to me most of those are too heavy in texture to look correct. I still have the best results with either a very thin material or a silk scarf in with a gold tone to it. I actually ended up with a rather nice light brownish effect material from walmart. Its one of those kinds where you can almost see right though it on the bolt, but with the dark cabinet behind it doesn't show though while letting the most sound out.

My signifigant other picked the fabric colors. I'm probably going to change the felt later since it's just too much for me. The grill cloth goes well with the room. My mom had the cloth from my grandma's stash of fabrics. Knowing my grandma it's probably from the depression. I'm going to order a case decal soon since I have to order a hinge spring for the reproducer. The current spring has a minor crack on one side. I found this out when I replaced the reproducer gaskets. I did have a decal but it tore when I was applying. C'est la vie. I spent most of today making a spreadsheet of all my discs. I've filled the cabinet and have 19 discs leftover so now I'm going to have to come up with an additional storage cabinet. Well at least with 91 discs I'll have a good selection to listen to.
