That's a Columbia I wouldn't mind owing (if I had the room!) Did you find this locally? I'm lucky if I run across a no-name portable around here lately! Love the record storage boxes oh, and the key. NICE!

Bill, Not locally, no. Mark Ginter, out in Indiana, had been hunting one of these down for some time - finally found one (this one) a few years back, and recently decided to part with it. I bought it from him, and after some theatrics with uship.com, had it safely delivered here. I love it. Motor is pretty noisy, and needs some help, but runs just fine. I gotta gear up before tackling a 4 spring Columbia motor.... don't see myself doing that anytime soon The tone arm/reproducer is frozen - reproducer needed a rebuild, and the pot metal broke after a few gentle twists - the expletives flew, let me tell you. I rebuilt the reproducer as best I could, and then epoxied the pieces back together. It actually sounds pretty good, despite the half-arsed rebuild and epoxy. I THINK that I need to try to find an identical tonearm and a Columbia concert grand reproducer. Why? Because the diameter of the current repro is just slightly too big: when I close the lid when it's playing, the lid hits the reproducer, jamming the needle into the record. Found that out the hard way All that aside, it actually sounds pretty good, even with the lid up. I dig interesting upright machines, so this one's on display in the living room... Now I gotta find a good spot for that TLP Credenza. Matt
