hello to all i have the opprotunity to buy a pathe phonograph (cabinet style) i am unsure of the model # as i have not seen it yet going to look at it on saturday. from the pics it looks kinda rough and the pic. shows that there is standard lateral cut record on it but the reproducer looks like it should have a saphire stylus on it. when i spoke to someone about the mach. i asked if there was any other records that comes with it they said this was the only record and it works ?. if you were to play a standard lateral cut record with a saphire stylus would it actually make any sound that would ressemble music and how much damage would be done to the stylus. i told them they should probably not play that record on it. they asked why and i said i would explain when i looked at the mach. ( how does one tell if the saphire stylus needs replacing). i have a stack of pathe records from france i have tried to date the labels by checking on the music museum website. it appears that most of them are from the late 20s or early 30s these would be lateral cut records if i'm not mistaken.(they are not actuelle needle cut) but i do have some that according to the website are from 1919 right around the time they switched from vertical to lateral so i am unsure what cut these are. i also have a stack of diamond discs. i have heard that you can play a D.D. on a pathe mach. with a saphire stylus. well i'm begining to ramble on here so let me try to simplfy this.
(1) how do you test a saphire stylus.
(2) is a saphire stylus only meant to play vert. cut records.
(3) can i play an edison D.D. with a saphire stylus.
(4) can i play a pathe vert. cut record on my edison disc player
i really want this phonograph as pathe mach. are pretty rare around these parts first one i've seen in the short time i have been collecting phonograph's. once again any help with this is GREATLY APPRECIATED AS ALWAYS.
P.S. hello maroongem just wanted to say thanks for the info on the brunswick gerona and needles i had asked about. i have some pics i have been meaning to post just never can seem to find the time.
best regards dan
