Hi – I’m a new member. I’ve had an Edison Fireside Combination Model A serial number 2712 and a Victor VV-IV sitting in my basement for more than 30 years and have done nothing with them.
The Edison is pretty rough cosmetically but I don’t see that as a major problem as I recently restored an antique truck from the ground up.
I have a Standard horn that I hope will fit this machine. I will need a crane.
The Edison does not have a lid; the cabinet needs refinishing. The bed plate needs to be repainted. And it needs a belt. It’s also missing the gear cover.
What is the correct name of the lower bar that that I think drives the carriage? That, too, is missing.
The motor seems to be OK – It ran for 4 minutes and 45 seconds. There were no bumps or grinds. The main noise seems to be from the governor.
I’m going to try to clean and lube the motor etc without disassembling the whole thing by immersing it in solvent. I realize that is not the preferred method and I will listen to your suggestions.
I’ll have to rebuild the reproducer – Model K. It appears to be all there.
I’m very glad this forum is here!

"The lower bar that drives the carriage." You mean the feedscrew?

Hello,
It looks like you are missing the feedscrew, for certain. That can be easily gotten enough via ebay or several parts dealers out there. For the rest of the motor, you really need to strip it down, clean each part, and reassemble it. There's no other way to do it. In addition, you may need a new spring for your motor. I've never had an Edison Fireside, but the motor should run for a longer time than that.
In regards to the finish; are you sure it can't be saved? Can you post a picture of the cabinet? I've saved some cabinets that looked pretty well trashed.

There's an online manual for the Fireside at Nipperhead. Page 2 shows the top works & motor, and includes a list which may help you identify other parts you might need. nipperhead.com/old/fireside02.htm

Vicky,
Where do you live in the Green Mountain State? I live right next door in NH and have had a few Fireside machines over the years. They are great working machines and I can help you with the proper horn and also go over the motor and rebuild the Reproducer. Send me a PM if interested.

Honestly, I would leave the finish as it is, while maybe putting a small bit of wax over it. There are several ways to make a cabinet look good, even if it is half-way gone. If you want, I can share some tip sand tricks that I have used in the past.

Yesterday I started cleaning it with GoJo. I think it looks pretty good.
I'll post a pix of the back side later on today.

That's good. You have the carriage arm and what looks like a repairable Mod. K Reproducer which was proper for that machine. I'm guessing that the hinge block post that screws into the sound tube is broken off so you will need to get that drilled out and replace it with a new one. The rest looks ok from the pic., but you will need new gaskets as well.

"Vicky,"
It's great to see that you have managed to make the back side of the cabinet look nice. I can only wait to see the front. Remember; don't rub too hard.
Judging from the looks of the top plate, you will need to strip it, repaint it, and put decals on to simulate paintings for the signature and lines. It's a lot of work, but will be worth it when done. However, I have only done one of these, and can't recall
It would not be a bad idea to get that reproducer repaired, as maroongem stated. You might want to email George Vollema at: victrola@triton.net. Other than that, some others might be able to tell about some cheaper repairmen out there.
Best,
Garret
