Just bubbling this back up to see if anyone has suggestions. Thanks!!
Hi folks,
I'm restoring my Standard Model B, and have a couple of questions about lubing the motor.
First, I noticed that the spring barrel has a hole, about half inch in diameter, on the side. I assume this was cast to provide a way to get grease to the spring. Was there originally a rubber gromet or something similar covering the hole? My motor looks like over the years, the grease has leached out of this hole. There was a fair amount of old, grey/black looking gunk on the gears and the spring barrel. Just thought there might have been a gromet gone missing that used to be there.
Do you use Edison's original formula of vaseline and flake graphite to lube the main spring?
How about the smaller gears and bearings? Would you recommend silicone or some other lubricant? After I get the motor all cleaned up again, it would be nice to keep it that way if that's possible.
Thanks for any suggestions. This is a great information site--I'm learning every day.

Bill,
Thanks. Yes, I did locate the bushing. Do you have a source for the proper bedplate paints? Would an art supply or engineering supply have a mechanical pen?
Sorry for all the process questions. I'm still building my "favorites" links for Edison restorations.

Do you fellows recommend re-painting a bedplate, or just cleaning as much as possible? My Standard B project has striping that has almost disappeared. I'm trying to decide if I should start from scratch or try to preserve as much original as possible.
If re-painting is done, what paint should be used, and how do you re-stripe? I've seen decal transfers, but think paint striping would be preferable.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!

Sorry for the novice question. I did a search, but didn't come up with any specifics.
I have a Standard B that needs a new belt. I have belt material in route, but need to know the length for a Standard B, how to splice, and procedure for replacing.
I know you folks can do this in your sleep. Thanks for any advice!

Bill
This is exactly what I needed to see. Thanks!
To the right of the small mandrel gear, where the mandrel shaft goes through the bedplate casing, is there supposed to be a bearing? On my machine, the mandrel shaft is substantially smaller than the hole in the casing, so seems like there should be a bearing there?
Thanks again.

Does anyone have a picture of the Standard B mandrel gearing, not the 2/4 minute conversion, but the regular 2 minute set-up?
I just acquired a Standard B rebuild project, and I'm fairly certain it's missing one or more gears on the mandrel shaft. I don't have a copy of Frow's book (if that would even help), but if anyone has a Standard B 2 minute set up, that would be great.
Thanks!!
