I will be applying the decal over the last coat of shellac. The Alcohol in the Shellac may cause the decal to wrinkle. The last coat is rubbed to a satin finish and once the decal is applied I will give it a coat of wax.

I wouldn't use a drill press or even a drill there would be too much risk damaging the treads. Does the screw look clean, if so I would try mating it were it is broken , using a little force you might be able to get it out far enough to grab it. Also was the mandrel damaged in the first pic it seems angled

I did try to show the set screw on the pulley but I couldn't get the right lighting or angle. I'm guessing that the wire on the outside was some type of stabilizer.

[img src="[/img] i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr113/klinkmi/DSCF0256.jpg"] Here are some pictures of my Home Mod. C. The restoration is almost complete or as far as I'm going to take it. The cabinet has been refinished to approximate of what it looked like originally including the hand rubbed Shellac Finish. The Bed plate is original , I just cleaned it up a bit. I have a replacement decal on the way. The horn is original although it does have some scratches I have to touch up. The crane is a reproduction. The entire motor including the mainspring have been cleaned and lubricated. This was the first phono that I have restored in 20 years. I started at about 14 and am glad to see I didn't forget certain techniques. Mike

I guess that I'm not the only one that has had an item damaged through shipping of the USPS. Several years ago I had purchased several 2m Black Wax Cylinders by a reputable seller off of E-Bay. The package was sent Insured Parcel Post. When the package arrived the bottom was completely crushed with even peanuts falling out. The box was marked fragile on every side but I guess this meant nothing to the USPS. If I can recall 6 out of the 15 were completely shattered and about 3 were completely cracked. I had to show the USPS the complete transaction with purchase price and that these were the exact items that were shipped. I didn't get the refund immediately as I was told it had to be investigated. Sorry to see the condition that yours arrived. With a little glue and some patients I think you should be able to repair. Just remember to remove all of the old hide glue from the joints so you get a good bond when you reassemble.

Thanks for the info, I have already sent it out to have the stylus replaced and also a new diaphragm. It definitely does have an echo and sounds like it is missing the grooves of the record. I really can't complain because it was stuck in a cylinder container when I purchased a large lot of cylinders at an Auction.

I did solve the problem by replacing the End Gate Bearing and after a few adjustments it does play fine. I will say out of the five Edison's I have this one is the most temperamental.

I hope this might help solve this mystery. After disassembling my Home Mod C I noticed the pulley has the spring wire on the outer side (as posted from "Newbie Needs Coaching"), but it does have a Setscrew on the inner side. I didn't notice this at first considering it was crusted in hardened grease. It must have been stored in a very hot attic for the grease was hardened to the point I has to soak the parts for three days in mineral spirits before it was easily removed. In the mainspring it was so hard it came out in chunks. I'll post some pics as soon as I get my camera working.

Be careful when buying wax cylinders. If they have discolorations especially brown spots they are mold. The mold actually eats or etches the grooves leaving distortions in the recording. Also be careful when buying on E-bay especially when a seller only has a pict. of the case. If there is some that your really interested ask the seller ques. on appearance. I've gotten some great deals on E-bay so there are good ones out there.

Just wondering if anyone had to replace the stylus on one of these. I have one that really sounds bad and believe the diamond may be worn

I am guessing that both these machines in question are later B's. My mod C has the last pat. date of May 22, 1906 with the serial # being 338434. It also has been converted to a 2-4 min the mandrel has #C-D stamped on it and the belt pulley is stamped C.

I am presently restoring a Home mod C and I have the same situation with the belt pulley. At first I though someone had lost the screw and and stuck the rod into the screw hole. None of my other Edison's have this . If this was not done at the factory , I would love to know how they drilled such a small dia. hole into a 3/16 dia shaft. I also have the same type of markings between shaft #1 and #2 but I have 8 dots. Seven of then are in a circle with one in the center. I'll try to get some pics.

Gotta hate that 'Pot Metal'. I think that this is one of the inventor's biggest pitfalls.

Kevan, You would have to change the ring that connects the bell to the horn neck if you want to use it on an Edison. Repros are available for this. Also, Edison used different decals than the one pictured, but it would be a shame to remove the one that is there. You can get the crackle type paint in a spray can to reproduce the finish on the horn neck. Bill This can also be woodgrained to match the mahogany just as they did it on the goose necks of the of the Music Masters for phonographs.

Huh? A lot of people still remember 45s and LPs? Their numbers are dwindling? Everybody remembers 45s and LPs! It's only been a few years that they've no longer been available. ;D Rocky How many of those dwindling #'s remember Jukeboxes that you can see the record play?
