Recently I had posted a thread on the OTVMMB, that I had bought a small statue of "Nipper" The Victor Talking Dog. It had stayed on topic for a while, then got off topic. Part of that was due to "Little Nipper". Stating why he didn't like Edison Machines, and preferred the Victors. Something about the quality of 78's being better then the DD's. Now it has gotten into humor, and why a "guest" thought something was not funny, but when you look at it, it is. Mind you, I not upset that the thread went off topic. Far from it, I just think it's interesting how this sort of thing happens. There would have been a time, when this sort of thing would have, but I grown past that sort of petty thinking.
I love how it became a debate sort of, over which was better, Edison or Victor. Naturally instigated by Little Nipper. I am not annoyed by him, but I do think he is annoying. He was telling me why, he would never own an Edison machine. But, were not going to get into that. I think all phonographs, be they Edison, Victor or whatever, are equally good. I would never say, I would never own a Victor machine, or think Edison is better. I like all antique phonographs equally. Granted Edison will still be my favorite, but that's only because that was the first phonograph I bought.

I used to find "LN's" posts amusing-for the first month or so. Not anymore. I often wonder why he bothers posting because he never contributes anything of value to anyones posts. If you search his post history, all he seems to do 99.9% of the time is run other people and their stuff down, make bad taste titty jokes and shovenistic(?) remarks to female members, or telling Dan how he should be running the board. Just some of the reasons I guess for Matt's comment , under News, on the home page here. Going off topic has never annoyed me. I got used to that years ago, sitting around getting drunk with friends, but its a bit dissapointing when it becomes a pregnant dog fight or down right nasty. Personally, if I wasn't limited by money and space, I would collect every different model phonograph I could find, no matter what brand they were. I find them all interesting in their own ways. I've always loved music, and have been getting records since I was about 4 years old. By age 7, I got my first record player (my mother was afraid I'd ruin their good stereo because I'd play records any chance I'd get) and started listening to "old fashioned" music around the same time- mainly old rock n roll. I was 10 before I bought a "New release" that was actually played on the radio. I could never limit myself to one brand or format. I often wonder what I'll do when they throw me in a nursing home when the time comes, and I have one room to live in. I guess I'll have no TV, but a DD machine with a lateral record adaptor, and an edison cylinder machine instead. If I couldn't have at least those two, I'd rather be dead!

Yeah, I don't think so.

Gents,
I voted for the petunias! ;D
I have, in the past, contributed some jocular Edison bashing. I originally believed the few Edison naysayers. I don't mind some joking and some conversational detouring, but I do dislike thread hi-jacking by one or two "guests" and a member on the Vic Board. Nuff said.

As far as early phonographs go, I feel that the Edisons sound the best and when you get to newer ones then the Orthophonics sound best. Both have their own particular sound and I enjoy listening to both types. An edisonic, however, has a very nice sound that has an uncanny realism to it when you listen to a female artist at a distance far enough away that you do not hear the scratching of the record.

I think if we all just refused to rise to the bait that LN offers and simply ignored him, I think he would eventually cease. My take on him is that he is a miserable human being that reviles in making other's lives as miserable.

Didn't TAE ask you on the other Board if you would chop the head off your new Nipper figurine and send it to him?

Yes he did, and I am not planning on doing that. Little Nipper and TAE, were just giving me a hard time, becasue of it. Of cousre I am not going to give in, too such childish behavior. I didn't mention the fact, that I have a Columbia Cylinder case, which btw, has an Edison cylinder in it. Which I was not expceting to find, I was hopeing to find a Columbia Cylinder, and not an Edison one. However, these things happen.
It's true that I do have only Edsion machines becasue I think they are really neat, and different. Which makes them unique. However I also happen to like other phonographs as well. I happen to have some ad's for various other phonograph machines, as well as Edsion. I happen to like the Victor Dog, and had wanted my very own. So now I do.

Bill Remember, too that Dan G. seems to revel in the chaos that can go on from time to time over there. I ignore Joe too, no point in giving him fuel, we've seen where that gets us! ;D Sean

I doubt that most people who say "off" remarks are out to be viscious but more likely, thoughtless in the fact that they may not consider how a remark might affect how someone feels. Consideration for the other person is the key. . . . . .

That's why I make it a point to avoid political discussions on the message boards. I've seen those kinds of discussions turn rancorous on many occasions. Political fighting has done more harm than the occasional run-ins referenced above.

Rocky,
I wish I could stay out of some of these rants, but I get very annoyed reading some of 'em ;D I like a good "political" discussion but it seems some, not all, take political discussions very personal. And of course I get very riled when I feel my friends are being attacked.
I do find it easier, as time goes on, to stay out of many of these type threads. ;D
Ortho, the Internet is like Halloween everyday for many. The anonymity of the 'net, like a mask, gives license to many to say whatever the hell they want without consequence. (Or at least they think so.) The more anonymous someone is the more vitriol you're likely to here from them very often.
Regards, J.
