Posts go off topic - this is a reality, and in my opinion perfectly acceptable. It's just like conversing with someone in person - you start shooting the breeze, and you cover a wide range of subject matter - give it a few hours, and next thing you know you have the problems of the world solved...
BUT
Constant, incessant, annoying, and meaningless posts from jerks like Joe Balitzki (AKA "Little Nipper") go beyond "off topic" into the realm of stupid, and many times outright rude.
Again, if you were speaking to someone in person and they spoke in such a way, some folks would ignore such behavior; some might find the need to point out why it is not appropriate and ask that it stop; others, still, might take matters further to assure it stops (when such behavior continues it is classified as harrassment).
Harrassment of this sort doesn't even need to be "nasty". For example, if someone were make multiple posts on a BBS on a daily basis, for months on end, that simply read "Wheat Chex rule!".... Nasty? Of course not. Annoying and disruptive? For weeks on end, yes indeed. The moderator has every right to boot them, and SHOULD do so.
Online, when reading a BBS, it can become increasingly difficult to ignore such behavior. This is where a board moderator must step in and take action.
Posts that end up off topic are normal, and not a problem. We're here to shoot the breeze, right?
Matt

See, now this is a thread that I don't mind has gone off topic. However, a theard that has gone off, topic is to be expected, and I have learned to live with that fact. I just don't need to sweat, the small stuff.

Paul, O.K. So what is the topic of this tread? I thought it was Threads getting off topic. I thought that was the topic we were discussing, but it that's not the topic of this thread then what is the topic? I'd be more than happy to stay on topic, but sadly I've forgotten what the topic was! I did think we touched on other topics but kept coming back to the main topic. I had assumed these were sub-topics of the main topic. These sub-topics having direct bearing on the main topic ergo still being the topic. I always want to be topical! I try so very hard. OUCH! My brain hurts! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Regards, J.

Baiscly, it was how topics go off topic, and at the same time we went off topic, or did we really go off topic, or did we just start talking about other topics. The longer the thread or topic goes on, the higher probabality, that it will go off topic. Basiclly, it depends on whether people who reply, to a topic have actually read the frist post? If you have not read the first post, and all the subsequent replies, then it would more then likely stay on topic. If not, then the topic goes off topic it. If I haven't confused you enough I was just testing a therory, to see, if a topic would go off topic, or stay on topic. As it turned out it went off topic.

This thread is about being OFF topic. Therefore, if we were to revert to being ON topic (whatever that may be in this case), we would then be OFF topic. In other words, If we are ON topic, we are OFF topic, and OFF topic is ON topic. If we are OFF topic, we are then fully ON topic, which is OFF topic. ;D Rocky

Rocky, As you grow older young man, you'll find you can't burn the candle at both ends! ............................................. (You rabble rouser! ;D ) We are on topic as the topic is threads going off topic-unless I'm very much mistaken (and if I am, the heck with it! ;D) Of course there is also a sub-topic regarding a nameless furbearing reptile So I do believe we have consistently remained, with minimal digressions, on topic. As far as the subject of said topical thread goes-whatever it is I'm against it! Now I'm off to play with the college widow. Regards, J. aka Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff Remember this thread is for topical use only, not to be ingested!
