John,
As well you know, the general consensus on the other board was that the statement by that individual was a whole lot of hooey. Of course, you have one particular individual there that is going to go off on tangents and argue with you till he's blue in the face that this statement is correct. My suggestion is to give up. What you said about front horn horn machines being more destructive is 100% in my opinion. This could go on ad infinitum due to so many variables, and more likely than not, you're not going to convince the author of that statement on Phonoland, but simply put, that is rubbish!

I have to agree with Kirk. There is some silliness here, but usually not to the extent of viciousness. There are those over there that won't join here because they can't hide behind the anonymity of "guest" to post their scurrilous remarks.

John,
Speaking of Phonoland, did you see the reply from Recordchanger regarding my answer to what type of Columbia that was? I'm not sure if he didn't get my humor or that he believes that cut in half machine really was a table model!

A XI would be my guess also. Heh, he looks old enough to be the original owner!!!!! I wonder what Brunswick tune he's playing.

John,
Interesting video. His facts in some instances are a bit off, but not bad. I wonder if he realizes he's sitting on a 5K + machine! I notice also that it's missing the auto-shutoff assembly which he's probably unaware of. That cylinder is called "Characteristic Negro Medley #1876 by the Peerless Quartet," and is one of the more "offensive" by today's standards. He better watch out for Sharpton & Jackson to come a knockin'!

For those of you who are MAPS members, what is your opinion regarding the new format size of their monthly periodical? Personally, I preferred the older format as I would slide it into a plastic sleeve when finished, and put it in a large 3 ring binder. As an aside, did any of the MAPS members here read the Swap Shop column? There is a advert (1st one) from a Ebayer we all know that is willing to pay $600-800.00 for certain DD electrics!!!! He supplies a list of his wants and I'm very tempted to be mercenary an offer him the 2 that I have on his list!!! ;D

John,
Your Star Record was made by Hawthorne & Sheble from 1907-1910. The earliest recordings were from American Record Company masters. Yours though was probably from new H&S masters. They went into bankruptcy in 1909 following a patent infringement brought by Victor. Columbia then picked up the pressing of their discs with a new black label until early 1910 and all remaining stock was auctioned off to Macy's when Columbia stopped production. H&S were more notable for their MG, and silk covered horns which were larger than the typical ones found on the early cylinder machines. Edison didn't start supplying his cylinder machines with larger horns until 1907 or so, as the witch's hat and conical were derigueur. This is the 1st time that I have seen one of these discs!!! Quite cool! BTW, some were announced, does this one have an announcement at the beginning?

Sean,
On pg 418-419 of the same volume, there is a letter dated 10/22/29 from Ralph Allen concering the disposal of existing stock of phonos & records, and in one of the paragraphs it reads, "Burn all records in stock, including 212,566 not carried in inventory, thus releasing 600 packing cases which may be salvaged thru disc record sales at $.90 cents each." Ron has a footnote saying the records were in fact burned, but some working moulds survived. What a crying shame!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in agreement with Sean on there being another "poster" other than Chantez. His post style is entirely different from this asshat that has been posting his nonsense. As far as the "mystery poster," WOOF!" If you go to page 415 of Ron D's BA recordings, vol.2, he has a reprint of a Blue Amberol Stock Card for 5716, and as of 7/6/29, there were 102 in stock. Out of those, you wonder how many went into the big BA bonfire that they held after the doors closed for the phono dept!!!

I have to reluctantly agree with Rocky on the mandatory registration. This asshat is really getting out of hand, and Dan is either unable or unwilling to stop it.

Not sticking up for the individual that maroongem was talking about but I think the potty mouth is another individual alltogether.Just my take, I've been watching but it got old. I suppose only Dan can answer that as he logs the IP addys. I DO remember though that you stood up for Chantez, so your posts are irrelevant to me. Forgive me for being blunt, but that is the way it seems to me. I can call up the post if you wish. Bill
