2 minute stylus is supposed to be 36 thousandths of an inch in diameter, the record groove created with a 40 thousandths cutter. four minute playback stylus of 18 thousands of an inch cut with a 20 thousandths cutter.

It seems like it is working fine to me? Why is TMF all full of British stuff, while interesting, I rather discuss American machines.

My latest improvement is I went from a single helix spiral core, to a double, just like an original Edison brown wax record, and if you have a class M they come with channeled rims if desired. Examine an original blank and see that where the spiral ends on both ends, you will note two spirals, one inside the other, that terminate on the opposite sides of each other. What I am going to catch flack about is that my new blanks are so identical, to an original brown wax blank that it is difficult to tell them apart, except mine are a little longer than the originals, to facilitate more time. I now make business machine blanks too, which have advantages over original ones. My business machine blanks are of a stable compound using triple pressed, but authentic formula octadecanoic acid, they do not contain stearine pitch, and uses ceresine in place of paraffin found in Ediphone this translates into a quiet blank, that is stable and does not fog or decompose easily.

Although most collectors do not like me, there is still the fact that I have do have experience making blanks and recordings. I have put a series of videos up on youtube of experiments making blank cylinders, recording experiments, recording and observations. I now make spiral core brown wax blanks, black four minute recording blanks, and brown, and black dictation machine blanks. In the future I plan on manufacturing authentic spiral core concert blanks. youtu.be/AOVJojbkceo

As said before Model A machines play 2 minute cylinders only, with a model C reproducer, Blue Amberols will sound muddy, and every other groove is skipped over. Their is several manufactures of 2 minute cylinder records and blanks, and recording services out there. Wizard, Vulcan, Robert Lomas. If you obtain a recording attachment, there are 3 suppliers of new recording blanks for your machine, Borri Audio Laboratories, Paul Morris, and Chuck Richards. I used to offer a recording service, but I only have time now to make blanks cylinders. If you buy blanks, patronize all of us who make blanks, each has a different and unique sound, all are of a very similar formulations.

This is an essential piece of equipment for one who does a lot of shaving and recording. I have a 1906 topworks with electric motor, and a 1930s, and a late 1940s Edison shavers, they get used at least 20-30 hours a week! Is yours a hand powered unit, a spring motor, or electric motored? A photo would be helpful.

Some things to remember to get better sound in your rebuilds. All swivels must move freely. Do not clamp the retain ring down, you tighten them down to the point where things are sealed and no more, otherwise the sensitivity and bass is greatly effected. the link should allow the reproducer to play cylinders between 2.120 and 2.2" in diameter. Most cylinders fall between 2.135 and 2.180 in most cases. 2.150 was there goal thickness.

I can make you a new record. I have really worked hard to make blanks of very good quality, in fact the latest batches are even quieter than any wax I have ever used. I will post some test on youtube soon. Anyhow, here is a photo of a group of very fine new recording blanks I manufacture. I don't hack down Ediphone blanks and call them my own, they are actually made from raw materials and are an aluminum soap. Attachments:

The diaphragm and holder are from an Edison business machine, and is for 150tpi, or 4m recording.

It does work, I made a similar knife many years ago when I was down a shaver, although I think I used a piece of phonograph spring and honed it on a stone. I do think that a sharp sapphire does a little better job than the alternative, but it does work none the less. My shaver though is used about 14 hours a week,so that is more shaving than most do in a lifetime! The new blanks take about 45 min to shave down to the normal diameter they come out of the mold at 2.398" and are shaved down to 2.195"

I think the Edison Shop now makes plastic resin cylinders too, but I think he only sells on ebay.
